What is it, and what does it mean for your business?
Peter Kyle, DSIT Secretary, has appointed Matt Clifford, a tech entrepreneur and Chair of the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), to develop an AI Opportunities Action Plan aimed at increasing the adoption of AI technologies. Additionally, the Government will establish an AI Opportunities Unit to implement the recommendations from the Action Plan.
This move highlights the Government’s commitment to making AI a core part of its strategy to drive economic growth and improve public services.
The Action Plan will outline strategies for building a scaleable and competitive UK AI sector on the global stage. It will focus on ensuring widespread AI adoption in both public and private sectors, considering the necessary infrastructure, talent, and data access.
Key enablers, including the UK's computing and broader infrastructure needs by 2030, will also be addressed. The plan will explore ways to make this infrastructure accessible to startups and scale-ups, and emphasise the development and attraction of top AI talent across sectors.
Clifford is expected to present a set of recommendations to the Secretary of State in September. In tandem, DSIT will establish an AI Opportunities Unit to consolidate expertise and knowledge, ensuring the effective implementation of the recommendations set out in the Action Plan.
The Action Plan is anticipated to significantly enhance productivity and stimulate economic growth. This announcement follows the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) recent estimation that the UK could see annual productivity gains of up to 1.5% with increased AI development and adoption.
Overall, AI is projected to boost UK GDP by up to 10.3% by 2030, offering substantial benefits for UK businesses through improved productivity, efficiency, and technology. Initially, AI will be integrated into existing business software. However, companies lagging in basic digital adoption risk falling behind in AI adoption as well. Addressing this gap is crucial for maintaining economic growth and international competitiveness.
Rest assured, The Cloud Community team will keep on top of further announcements and best practices to share with our members as the programme gathers momentum.
